Friederiki Batsalia is Professor of German Linguistics at the Department of German Language and Literature of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

After completing her undergraduate studies in German Literature and her postgraduate studies in German Linguistics at the University of Hamburg (1981: Magister Artium, 1985: Dr. Phil.), she was an instructor at the Center for Translation and Interpretation (KE.ME.DI.) in Corfu/Greece and from 1984 to 1988 at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (Corfu).

Since 1986 she teaches and conducts academic research at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1986: EEP, 1988: Lecturer, 1993: Associate Professor, 2003: Professor).

Her scientific interests include the areas of Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Contrastive Linguistics, Bilingualism and First, Second and Foreign Language Acquisition, as well as the Theory and Practice of Translation. These topics cover her lectures both in the Undergraduate (Diploma) and the Postgraduate studies, as well as the issues and areas of focus in her publications. Specifically, Freideriki Batsalia has 5 monographs, 1 bilingual German-Greek/Greek-German electronic dictionary (in collaboration with a research team of the Universities of Patras and Koblenz) and over 40 articles on foreign language acquisition, bilingualism and translation in theory and practice.

At the same time, she had the scientific leadership in three research programs funded by European Union funds. Moreover, she was a research assistant in three other research programs related to the fields of scientific research mentioned above. In addition to the scientific management of research programs, she was responsible for two postgraduate programs; she was a member of the annual publication of the Hellenic Society of Applied Linguistics, a member of many committees of scientific conferences, as well as a vice-president and founder of the Greek Society for Translation Studies.

She also served for many years as the Chair of the Department.
